Sixteen high school drill teams competed in the first annual Wasatch Drill Invitational. Tremendous talent was brought to the gym floor this past weekend as dancers from all over Utah performed at Wasatch High School.
The invitational was a fundraiser for local Wasatch High School Waspettes. The girls were ecstatic to be hosting the competition. With an awesome facility, qualified judges, and great amenities the day went very smoothly.
Many local business were involved in making this invitational a possibility. Days Market, The Junction, June Pie, Dottie's Kolache Co., Quench It, Kneaders, and Fresh Bakery all played a part in helping to feed the drill team girls, coaches, and judges. Capunay Designs and Spensko Designs built custom trophies, Gogan Entertainment provided sound, and The Homestead Resort helped provide lodging. Wasatch High School and Rocky Mountain Middle School facilities and staff were used to host the invitational.
The Waspette head coach, Jordan Kohler, said "The Waspettes and coaching staff were so excited to host this year's Wasatch Drill Invitational. Being our first year hosting we were all a little uncertain of how it would go, but we feel so pleased at how everything turned out. We loved seeing all the talent that was brought to this competition and are so proud of all the teams. We want to thank all of the teams that came and wish them all good luck as they continue on with their seasons."
Results:
In the 1A division, Duchesne High School swept the floor taking first in Military, Dance, and Character. Rich High School took second in all three, and Diamond Ranch Academy took third. Rich High School also competed in the 1A Hip Hop category taking 1st place.
Even though Union High School was the only school in the 3A division, the girls blew away the judges with their talent and earned high rankings in all three state routines as well as Pom.
With the greatest number of schools competing in the 4A division, the competition was tough. In the Military category Corner Canyon took 1st, Payson 2nd, and Uintah 3rd. In the Dance category Uintah took 1st, Corner Canyon 2nd, and Box Elder 3rd. In the Character category Box Elder took 1st, Uintah 2nd, and Olympus 3rd with Payson and Timpview following closely behind. In the Hip Hop category Uintah to 1st, Corner Canyon 2nd, and Alta 3rd. In the Lyrical category Box Elder took 1st and Alta 2nd. In the Officers category Box Elder took 1st, Uintah took 2nd, and Alta 3rd.
With five 5A schools, Layton placed 1st, Sky View 2nd, and Lehi 3rd in both the Military and Dance categories. In the Character category Sky View took 1st, Cottonwood 2nd, and Lehi 3rd. Lehi won 1st in Hip Hop and Sky View took 1st in Pom. In the Lyrical category Layton took 1st, Jordan took 2nd, and Lehi took 3rd.
Uintah High School won the invitational sweepstakes earning the most points overall out of all the drill teams. A drill down competition took place and solo, duo, and trio performances occurred the night before.
